Frequently Asked Questions

Does Granite have a completely smooth surface?

No. Many granites contain pits and fissures that are natural characteristics of granite. Some granites exhibit these properties more than others, and the lighting of the room can make these marks more or less visible. These attributes, which are often unique to a single piece of granite, should be pointed out to the customer prior to deciding on a particular material and pre-approval of the slab is recommended.

Can Marble be used in the kitchen?

Marble is not recommended for installation as a counter top because of its tendency to stain and scratch. However, because of its beauty and the classic look, marble is an excellent choice for vanities and fireplace surrounds.

Does Granite stain, or at least stain easily?

In general, no, granite is resistant to stains. All stone is porous to some extent, but granite has very little porosity relative to other stones. Most granite colours will never show moisture, although some colours will show a dark spot if a puddle of liquid is left on the counter for a period of 30 minutes or more. The spot will eventually dry up and evidence will show. To be safe, be sure that your granite is sealed properly - either by the fabricator, or after the granite is installed.

Can I cut on Granite?

Knives can be used to cut on granite, but it will more quickly dull your knives.

Does Granite require a lot of maintenance? Or, what type of daily care does Granite require?

Routine cleaning with mild soap and water is all that is generally required. Once a year, a re-application of a penetrating sealer should be performed. It is very important to NEVER use abrasive cleaners. A good rule of thumb is to never clean granite with something that you wouldn't wash your hands with.

Will heat cause Granite to chip and crack? Or, will a hot pot affect the Granite, or do any damage?

Granite is heat resistant and can withstand the heat of hot pots and pans without damage. Impact from a heavy object, such as a full pot from half a meter above the surface, will crack the surface. However, standard kitchen items such as hot pots, simply being placed on the counter, will not affect it.

Does having a Granite counter top make any difference with respect to bacteria?

Bacteria are found everywhere. If it is on a granite surface, then it can also be found on a laminate or solid surface. Our advice is to use an anti-bacterial soap to wash your counter top if you are concerned about adverse affects related to bacteria.

How do I know when my Granite needs to be sealed again?

One method you can use to check if your granite needs to be resealed is to sprinkle some water on your counter top. If the water soaks into the stone and does not bead up, then we would recommend resealing your granite.
